Styles of Airsoft Guns

Airsoft guns vary just as much as real guns. There are revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, bolt action rifles, assault rifles, urban assault rifles (UARs), sniper rifles and more. In any airsoft event, it’s always suggested that you have some form of assault rifle, even if the fully automatic selection is against the rules. It’s advisable to also have a sidearm in the event that you find yourself in a situation of having to reload your main weapon or in close quarters combat (CQC). Many snipers don’t believe that they need these items, but nothing could be further from the truth. In a perfect scenario, a sniper at an airsoft event – or even in a real-world situation – should never have to be concerned with CQC, but there’s always a chance that your position will be breached.

Firing Mechanisms

Firing mechanisms are also varied in the world of airsoft. You have options such as spring, AEG/AEP, CO2, Gas and PolarStar. For pleasure shooting, the most important thing is to find a firing mechanism that you like. It really doesn’t matter how effective it is, just as long as it’s fun and feels right to you.

If you’re going to a competitive airsoft event, you’ll want to put some more thought into your selections. Here are our recommendations below.

For snipers, bolt action is the way to go. Bolt action is actually a form of spring action, but it allows for higher tension on the spring. Once that tension is released, you get a much higher velocity, greater accuracy, and longer range than a standard spring gun.

When you’re choosing your assault rifle or UAR, there are a couple of choices based on your level of immersion into the airsoft community and how much you’d like to spend. We suggest that if you’re new to airsoft, you should go with an automatic electric gun (AEG). AEGs have a gearbox inside that allows for firing. The gearbox can be made of either metal or plastic. Metal is more durable, reliable, and upgradable, but plastic gearboxes reduce weight and cost. If you’ve been in the game for a while and want to use the newest and most advanced firing system, the PolarStar Fusion Engine is the way to go. The Fusion Engine is a direct replacement part for AEGs. The main difference is that it uses electronically controlled pneumatics to fire. This allows for much higher velocity and rate of fire than an AEG.

Though your sidearm may not be used frequently, you have to make sure that the firing mechanism you choose for your pistol is suitable for the event. Many airsoft players think that since the pistol is used so little they can take a spring firing pistol and they’ll be fine. If you find yourself in a situation where you must use your pistol, you’ll find that a spring mechanism does you very little good. Gas or CO2 pistols are the best options for pistols. In a pinch or CQC, they’re perfect for defending your position or advancing into another room.

If you ask any tactician the most effective weapon in clearing rooms in an airsoft event, they’ll tell you to use a shotgun. Some events don’t allow shotguns, but if they do, make sure you have yours. Another purpose is if you’re maintaining your position and enemies are coming through a bottleneck. Considering the short distance that you would anticipate accuracy with a shotgun, the firing mechanism isn’t particularly important. Most of them are spring operated and will do just fine for the operation at hand.
