Properly Using Magazines in an Event

In a real life firefight, the rule to remember is simple: reload when you want to, not when you have to. In order to be able to follow this rule, you need to have plenty of extra magazines available. Also, you’ll want to keep your full mags separate from the ones you’ve pulled already. If you’re wearing your battle dress uniform, you can place your pulled magazines into the cargo pockets of your trousers. However, if you’re in the middle of a combat situation, you can just let the magazine drop and reload. Don’t pick up the dropped magazines until a situation presents itself to do so.

Many people think that having only one extra magazine is all that’s required, or worse than that no extra magazines because they have a mid-cap or high-cap and can easily wind in more BBs. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you’re taking fire and need to reload quickly, it will take far less time to drop, pop, tap and rack than to wind in your BBs. You can do that once you’ve used all of your extra magazines during a break in fire. If you think that you can just take cover to wind, think again. If you’re laying down suppressive cover fire and your squad is depending on you, do you want to take the time to wind? Absolutely not.

Occasionally, even with several spare magazines, you find yourself out of BBs. When that happens, it’s time to go to your sidearm. Since you’ll likely be using your sidearm less, you probably won’t need as many magazines. But still take extras! Loaded magazines are a lot like insurance. It’s better to have and not need them than to need them and not have.
